Forget fancy kitchen gadgets.

In 2005, the Texas Legislature designated the cast-iron Dutch oven as the official State Cooking Implement.

The sturdy pot earned its place in Texas history long before modern kitchens. Spanish explorers, early settlers, ranchers and chuckwagon cooks relied on Dutch ovens to prepare meals over campfires.

Its durability, portability and versatility made it a dependable part of frontier cooking.

The Legislature made the designation official through Senate Concurrent Resolution 9.

Texas has a state flower, a state bird and even a state mushroom.

Apparently, we also needed an official pot.

And naturally, it’s cast iron.
