Most spiral seashells spiral clockwise.

Texas picked one that goes the other way.

The lightning whelk, a large marine snail found along the Gulf Coast, has an unusual counterclockwise shell. When positioned with its pointed end upward and its opening facing you, the opening is on the left.

That’s why it’s commonly called a “left-handed” shell.

In 1987, the Texas Legislature designated the lightning whelk as the official State Shell through House Concurrent Resolution 75.

And this isn’t just an empty shell washing onto the beach.

The living lightning whelk is a predator that feeds on clams, oysters and other shellfish. It can use the edge of its shell to pry open its prey.

Texas has an official flower, bird and mushroom.

It also has a state shell that spirals against the usual direction.

THE TAKEAWAY: Even Texas’ official seashell does things a little differently.
